The decision to create the non-profit Rhino Foods Foundation has been in the making for over five years. As we began to see our efforts in spreading Rhino Foods’ Income Advance Program to other businesses materialize, we became more dedicated to the idea of a foundation. Since our program’s inception a decade ago, we’re not only seeing impact in Vermont, but nationwide, along with encouraging partnerships developed with the FINRA Foundation and Filene Research Institute. Since inception, we’ve … [Read more...] about The Newest Rhino: Rhino Foods Foundation
Your Love of Cookie Dough is Natural
As anyone familiar with Rhino Foods knows, we make cookie dough for ice cream. We developed it 28 years ago with our friends at Ben & Jerry’s, and it is a large part of our business that we make it for most of the rest of the ice cream makers in the country. Since it was first introduced, our cookie dough inclusions have been a big hit, people love it, and it continues to be one of the favorite treats to add to ice cream. Why do we love cookie dough? Don’t Try This at Home: Edible Cookie Dough
Many of us grew up eating raw cookie dough straight from the mixing bowl. Most of us probably didn’t get sick, but people do. In 2009, people got sick in 28 states because they ate raw refrigerated Nestle Tollhouse cookie dough that was designed to be baked into cookies. The package said not to eat the dough, but people do what they do. Why does the FDA tell us to not eat raw cookie dough like you make at home? It’s related to the food safety risks of the ingredients, … [Read more...] about Don’t Try This at Home: Edible Cookie Dough
Rhinos’ Favorite Holiday Cookies
Not being a baker, the holiday tradition of cookie swaps, doesn’t play to my strengths. But a plate of mixed holiday cookies is so pretty, fun, and well, tasty. So I pull out my recipe for coconut macaroons and go “fancy” and dip them in chocolate. This year I thought it might be time to try something new and who better to ask than our foodies in the R&D lab. They’re experts in ready-to-eat cookie dough; they certainly have mastered baked cookie dough. Rob Douglas, … [Read more...] about Rhinos’ Favorite Holiday Cookies
Thank You for 37 Years of Dough, Family, and Partnership
Reflecting on being thankful this holiday season, I obviously think about owning Rhino Foods. What started out as a way to make some money on the side, while being the assistant coach of the UVM hockey team, has turned into a 37-year journey. My wife, Anne, and I opened Chessy’s Frozen Custard at the Champlain Mill in Winooski, Vermont, because I loved eating frozen custard and Anne had been waitressing for several years (sounded like a good idea at the time). I am grateful for making it through … [Read more...] about Thank You for 37 Years of Dough, Family, and Partnership
Building a more Inclusive Culture with Diwali and Ramadan
America is struggling with its diversity – race, religion, lifestyle choice, economic class. Every day in the media, we see one group arguing their point of view and another group arguing back. It exposes people’s fears of losing what is important to them and their sense of what is fair and just. The arguments over immigration ask Americans to think about who should be included in our nation’s story and future. It can bring up ugly stereotyping and collective amnesia that unless … [Read more...] about Building a more Inclusive Culture with Diwali and Ramadan
